  6. Very complete and clear and love the little bits of humor. An absolutely perfect tut. Did this with my kids about 15 years ago. Maybe time to re-visit. My friend is visiting this week, we might just try it.
Will have to look for "ZIG" pen tho :-( Did you try "Micron"? That's what I have here.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Hey lostsentiments... I made some small kits so that you can make them at home! Let me know if you want :)

    ReplyDelete
  8. LP...

I'm not sure if I tried micron.. the pen looks really familiar though..

The ZIG millennium pens are waterproof, fade proof and have archival quality among other things. I would definitely experiment with Micron - saves you spending more money!

Glad the tut took you down memory lane ;)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Wow, these are fantastic! I am *loving* your blog! I came across your hot pad tute on Stephanie's blog and when I said I'd be linking to it, she emailed me about your gorgeous creative space. I would love to link to some of your projects if you didn't mind!

  16. Hey folks... the pre-cut buttons were pre-cute by me :) I have them for sale in my Etsy store. Sparebutton.etsy.com

  17. how fantastic is that! sometimes i can't get past the basic shrink things. this is great!

  18. My sister just sent me this link..we tried to make shrinky dink bookmarks this past weekend with mixed results. When she cut circles out of the sheets, she turned the shrunken disks into magnets for my mother. Another variation on what you did.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Awesome Readmore! I'd love to see some pics!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Did you try putting a sealer on the backs after they are shrunken? Like Modge Podge or something?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hi Tami,

I have tried spay on sealers.. but the back goes clear. If that's the effect you're after, then I'm sure Modge Podge or something similar would work :)

The reason they go clear if you seal them with a finish, or put glue on them, is because the buttons have the frosted white back effect because there are tiny tiny fine cuts on the back (the rough surface). When a sealer is applied, it fills up those cuts and takes the frosted look away.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ohhhhh.... I just found some shrinky plastic I had and was wondering what to do with it :D

    Your work is fabulous!

    ReplyDelete
  23. LOVE this idea-one of the best tutorials I've seen in a while!!!! Wonderful:)

    ReplyDelete

  27. Hi I would love to purchase your kit but you are sold out. Will you be doing anymore???
Let me know.I love this !!!

    Debbie O In Idaho

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hi Debbie,

I won't be doing anymore kits in the meantime.. I'm heading to Australia on Wednesday for three months, and my circle cutter is broken :( from cutting so many buttons. I will only be offering the shrink plastic sheets from my Etsy store while I'm away.

    Super sorry!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Just caught craftnouveau.com twitter about this! LOVE IT! :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hiya! Love, love, love the personalized buttons!!! Would you be willing to share tips like what sort of circle cutter you use and how big do you make the buttons before shrinking? Thanks for sharing your creativity! Hope you have a wonderful time in Australia!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Sure! I use the Fiskars large circle squeeze punch. They are a dream to use, but they wear away so fast due to a fatal design flaw (which I've told them about - no reply mind you). and just a normal one hole hole punch to do the centre buttons.

So beware, you will get addicted to making buttons, and your Fiskar punch will wear away! I'[m onto my third.. I'm pretty much over buying them though :(

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks! Have you seen/tried the Martha Stewart Circle Cutter? Its a flat disc that you slide a cutting tool into and turn the disc. You can cut different sizes and only have to replace the cutting blade vs. the entire punch. I think I might give that one a try.

    Anywho, enjoy your trip!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hi,
can you tell me what Zig pens you exactly were using? I just bought one today - a Zig Millenium - but it is not permanent on plastic. Maybe you can show us a picture?
thanks and have agreat time in Australia,
    Petra

    ReplyDelete
  34. How do you get yours so perfectly round?!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi Petra.. I only saw your comment now! I just checked my email and I didn't get notified of your comment! So sorry, but better late than never! :-s

Here's a link to a pic with the pens I use.. can't believe it.. so sorry once again!

And Shirley... I used a circle hole punch! It was a Fiskar squeeze punch.. unfortunately.. they punches wear out really quickly though :(

  38. I previously bought a large amount of shrink plastic for a ring pattern I found. This is very cute. I now know what I am going to be doing with my left over sheets. Two thumbs up!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hey Lace, thanks for stopping by. I bet that ring pattern is the same tutorial which go me started/hooked!!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I have a tip for getting hand lettering that is neat and tidy. Take scraps of shrink plastic and write your words on the scraps. Flip them over so they are backwards. Then place your project over the scrap and trace the backwards letters. Works every time!

  41. Love this idea thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  42. brilliant! I have all these supplies on hand.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Really cool idea, all I've ever made with the stuff is jewelry, zipper charms, and pet tags.

    ReplyDelete
  44. LOVE these! What size circle punch do you use to start with? I know you said it was a fiskars punch. Thanks for sharing your ideas! :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hi Tiffany,

I used size Large for the Fiskars circle punch.

    Enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  46. thanks for sharing, lovely !!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. your tutorial is brilliant and I love the buttons that you created, fantastic

    ReplyDelete
  48. incredible !!! I don't kow this before !! do you know the name in french ? that's "plastique fou" ?

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm just wondering what size buttons holes you start out with. I feel like my normal hole punch 1/4" would be too small once shrunk, especially since I plan on using yarn with mine.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hi Stephanie,

the button holes end up big enough to sew thread through with no problem.

It's hard to say as I don't know how think your yarn is.. If in doubt just do a trial. I must have shrunk hundreds of buttons before I got them exactly how I wanted them..

    Good Luck!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Will you be selling this kit in your etsy store? I'd really like to get your patterns. I want to try this so badly!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hi Bonnie,

Unfortunately, I don't have any plans to sell these in my store anymore..

If you want the patterns, you can send me your email address, and I'll try and digg up the templates for you.

    All the BEST!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Which size punches did you use for the buttons? As a seamstress and knitter, being able to make my own buttons would be incredibly handy!

    Many thanks :D

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hi! I am so glad I have found out this web page! It is so amazing! I would like to try to make these buttons myself, but your store is closed. Is there any possibility to get your patterns? And which sort of plastic sheets do you use? I spent ages searching for it on the Internet. I tried to find some distributor for the Czech Republic, where I live, but I could not find any. I would like to but on ebay or something alike. Could you please email me on 326724(at)med.muni.cz?
Thank you very much :) and again - good job with these buttons!

    - you can make the buttons yourself but using a circle punch, and then make the button holes from a normal hole punch.
    - the shrink paper you need to use is see through, with one side that is rough

THE GOOD NEWS... I've started a new blog, and I'll be including this post with a little more information, and an easy to use and updated template sheet. Visit www.scissorspaperwok.com and in the new few days (maybe week) you'll see a clearer explanation of how to make these buttons!
